Full course description
Participants will be introduced to simulation-based learning experiences (SBE) as a teaching, learning and assessment tool, and will learn about educational theory that supports the use of SBE in education, review seminal healthcare simulation literature, and learn about the standards of best practice in SBE. Participants will also develop an original simulation scenario for use within their courses. The module will conclude with an immersive, 2-day practicum to apply concepts and practice prebrief, facilitation and debriefing skills.
Intended audience is health professions educators who have no experience, or limited experience, with simulation based learning. This is a foundational course in simulation best practices; it is not intended for people who have previous formal training in simulation education. Learners will be expected to apply concepts to a project which involves developing a novel simulation which could be implemented within a course they teach. Participants will have the opportunity to practice their simulation skills during a 2-day, in-person practicum at Northeastern University Charlotte Campus.
Participant Goals and Objectives:
Participants will gain an understanding of the standards of best practice in simulation education and apply them to the development of an original simulation scenario. They will also develop skills needed to facilitate a SBE through a 2 day, in-person practicum at the Northeastern University Boston or Charlotte campus.
Learning Objectives:
Discuss knowledge of the standards of best practice in simulation
Develop an original SBE using the provided template
Demonstrate skills required to facilitate key aspects of SBE including the prebrief and debrief during the practicum
Dates for in-person practicum at the Northeastern University Charlotte Campus 2151 Hawkins St #800, Charlotte, NC 28203
June 25-26, 2026
